In MEM, perfumer Antonio Gardoni passes lavender through clay, wood, minerals, burned sugar, and wax so that a new form emerges, like steel forged by the elements. It is dark, more aligned with clay and cep mushrooms than the usual fresh aromatic herbs. Sunshine soon arrives in the form of hops, toasted malt, and the pale ale fizz of aldehydes, lifting the scent out of its humus-rich opening. The scorched-sugar of ethyl maltol caramelises the lavender, creating a phantom accord of fruit, like the dark, almost calcified contents of a forgotten jar of peach marmalade. But as soon as the mind adjusts to this accord, MEM shifts again, this time into a rich floral heart of jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang, sacrificing prettiness for the more interesting facets of wax, gasoline, and rubber. Indian sandalwood offers a wheaten milkiness, and Himalayan cedarwood its lingering note of woodsmoke, which work in tandem to ease the florals and aromatics into the base. The drydown, which is sturdy and beautiful, weaves the sweet dust of unlit incense into the musky, salty, animalic base of a barbershop fougere. MEM is not a perfume that lends itself to easy interpretation, it will reward your patience a hundred times over. Beautiful, quixotic, and memorable, this is artisanal perfumery at its most daring.

Made in Italy

MEM is a rare and innovative perfume that truly escapes repetition and typecast, and seldom can a perfume boast such an attribute. Without doubt, MEM is a lavender fragrance, overdosed and carried to the highest of heights so to see it anew. Lavender has always been the heart of the fougere category, exploiting its olfactory range by bringing its contrasts forward, playing out in hot-and-cold, cool-and-warm currents in overlap. In MEM, Gardoni respects these contrasts but does without their overlap, instead sequencing great difference and contrast along the development of the scent in a meticulous fashion. A great sense of progression defines the experience of this perfume, all the better as each movement is a surprise - thanks to the huge note list attached to this fragrance’s formula. An initial convergence of floral, spice, wood, and animal notes becomes a melodious flow arranged to perfection. It is a complete fragrance: a landscape filled with lavender and seen through a stereoscope. Whatever your choice of metaphor - it is akin to an experience perceived from the ideal position, so everything is on display, and nothing is missed. MEM’s sparkle up top, its raspy and camphoraceous heart, to its floral base or animalic background - every texture, every facet, indeed every possibility - all are stupefyingly well-delineated in this scent.
