Sacred Scarab explores a side of fragrance that is largely untouched by Western perfumery. In this composition, perfumer Sultan Pasha works as if he had created an attar – a concentrated, oil-based perfume that offers an inwards intensity that both concentrates and quietens the soul of the wearer. Accordingly, Sacred Scarab is something that unravels as a result of its development, a curious intensity that seems to grow, only to soften, repeating this along the course of wear. With this style, the perfume is given as a whole, changing and modulating wonderfully.

The ancient Egyptian theme associated with Sacred Scarab is realised with a ‘kyphi’ accord, an ancient Egyptian incense kneaded into balls. What distinguishes this incense from others is a sweet and mature fruity wine note – redolent of dark fruits and plums – which was originally used as the binding agent in kyphi incense and repeated in this fragrance, constituting its base. Equally, a waxy-spicy-floral blue lotus accord re-establishes the theme of Sacred Scarab. The high sky dots the sky, as citrus notes accentuated with aldehydes convey a solar brightness and hot desert air sapped of its moisture. Resin notes reinforce this effect, slinky with an animalic civet note. This is an incense fragrance married to narrative, an impressive work that evokes not only the creature, but its mythical (and mystical) potency.
