Climbing to its perch in the morning sky, the African sun reaches across a mountain range to caress a wide, flat boulder, baking it to a gentle heat. From the shade of a narrow crevice, a family of hyrax emerges, hot dust dulling the sheen of their golden fur. They settle onto the warm expanse of rock to partake in their ritual sunbath, but remain ever vigilant. The shadow of a soaring eagle rushes across the ground. With an urgent squeal, the alarm is sounded - the colony dashes for cover. As the heat from sweltering sun intensifies, ancient aromas are coaxed from the scorched rocks, sparse vegetation and petrified hyraceum. Eerily, they intertwine to form a scent that is both primitive and exotic, its animalistic tendencies tamed by an undercurrent of sweet florals.

Amongst the catalogue of powerful animalic ingredients, hyraceum is oft-neglected – despite its distinctly woody and tar-like aspect. With this in mind, the task of the perfumer making a fragrance in an animalic style could be seen as perfumery-in-reverse, adding notes in order to diminish the impact of these intense animalic notes. Hyrax is a perfume of thresholds, softening the impact of its central animal accord (dominated by hyraceum) by imperceptibly adding florals, spices, and woods to the composition. The work is concentrated and has a single focal point; not a pyramid but a sphere made up of layers. It begins with a flash of pepper, animalic and musky on the one hand and fruity on the other. It is designed to shock as it bursts with a ferocious energy – spearheading a stampede of hyraceum, castoreum, and civet. An exceptional grade of Turkish rose oil is adjusted with the minerally length of saffron and the intensely glossy lacquer of hyacinth flower, whilst tonka bean becomes essential to the fragrance’s palpable texture and sturdy softness.

What ties everything together is an ingenious whiskey note – apparent only when it’s made known – it crosses toasted wood, earth, funk, smoke, mineral, and spirit, repeating and reaffirming the singular sensation of this fragrance that smooths itself on the skin of the wearer.
