Around the barely glowing embers, the drinks are passed from hand to hand. The final smouldering and glistening bark is mixed with the balmy, round scent of chocolate and honey. After a long day working, the scents of sweet liquor, vanilla milk and French coffee reward body and soul. Bonne Chauffe is a technical term used in Cognac production, and refers to the second distillation of the spirit, resulting in valuable eau-de-vie. This fragrance is inspired by the burning fire and the fiery energy of this distillation, as the name of this fragrance translates as ‘Good Heating’. It celebrates the fire that heats, illuminates, forges and awakens the senses. Twigs, dried roots and shavings mingle with oak logs to provide warmth and protection in a flaming combustion with a thick veil of smoke. The fireplace crackles and embraces the air with its blaze.

You can get lost in the depth of Bonne Chauffe, which feels like a return to form for the historic Cognac maison Frapin. This elegant brown spirit, from which the house has built and sustained its legacy, is the focus of Bonne Chauffe. Its emphasis is twofold: fire and concentration, the scent of twice-distilled and unaged spirit and charred oak barrels, both requiring fire for their existence. The scent of fruity eau-de-vie merging with wood, the fragrance has a discernibly spicy, malty, balsamic, and fruity complex. Its booziness is unmistakable, balanced with a remarkable freshness, tinged with the raw green of fresh wood and vegetation, echoed with vetiver, which crosses these impressions. It is a reminder that Cognac production is a process of many stages, and therefore with many different aromatic profiles. Bonne Chauffe is a swirl that exists at the point of an aromatic transformation, which, until then, settles in its aromatic bath of scent. Like a fine glass of spirit, it amazes with nuances of chocolate, tobacco, plum, bran, wood, incense, patchouli … and so much more.
