203. Men's Razor Review Send to a Friend

How many blades does one really need? What about microfins, battery power, titanium coatings or lubricating strips? What is the best men's razor on supermarket shelves? We put our lab coats on and got testing.

The Contenders:

Bic Classic Sensitive

The Bottom Line: Didn't give a very close shave and would often leave stray hairs behind. Overall, an utterly unenjoyable experience. Not recommended.

Gillette Sensor Excel

The Bottom Line: While it lacked the smooth glide of the Mach3, this razor did a suprisingly good job. It had a bit of trouble getting into the fiddly patches (like under the nose), but all in all it performed admirably. Combine this with the relatively low price of cartridges and you've got yourself a very good razor. Recommended.

Gillette Mach3

The Bottom Line: Head pivots to make shaving easy. Handle is nice in the hand. Blade life is good. Copes well with both light and heavy growth, shaves very closely and rarely leaves an unshaven hair behind. Unlike the Quattro or the Fusion, it is not easily clogged with hair or shave cream. Our only gripe is that it's difficult to shave fiddly bits like under the nose or sideburns with a whole lot of precision. Apart from that, it's a very good razor. Recommended.

Gillette Mach3 Turbo

The Bottom Line: To produce the Mach3 Turbo, Gillette basically took the original Mach3 and added anti-friction blades and an extra 5 microfins. The result is a razor that glides even smoother and more effortlessly than its predecessor. In our opinion, it's worth the extra upkeep. Highly recommended.

Gillette M3Power

The Bottom Line: According to Gillette, the vibrations produced by the M3Power are designed to 'reduce friction and increase razor glide', but we couldn't notice any difference. Don't get me wrong, this is still an excellent razor - but we couldn't see any reason to choose this over the Mach3 Turbo ... you're basically paying a whole lot more and getting the same thing. Not recommended.

Schick Quattro Titanium

The Bottom Line: With four closely packed blades and a network of wires connecting them, the Quattro is very easily clogged with hair and shave cream. It regularly skips and can tug on longer hairs, resulting in a rather uncomfortable shave - especially if you're shaving anything more than a few days growth. Blade life is good but the pivoting head seems inferior to Gillette's and makes an annoying clicking sound when it comes in contact with the skin. The large head felt bulky and was very difficult to manuevre into fiddly spots. Unlike the Fusion, there's no trimmer blade on the back and you can just about forget trying to shave with any real precision with this thing. At $3.75 per cartridge, it's also rather expensive. Not recommended.

Gillette Fusion

The Bottom Line: The Fusion is wonderfully engineered and gives a nice shave, but it's not worth the price. The sheer size of the head makes this razor feel awkward and cumbersome and with five closely packed blades, we also found that it was easily clogged with hair and shave cream. With the exception of the precision trimmer blade built into the back of the cartridge (which performed very well - especially around the nose and sideburns), we couldn't find any other significant improvements over the Mach3. At over $4 for a single cartridge, we feel that it just doesn't present enough of an improvement to justify the price. Not recommended.

And the winner is:

  Gillette Mach3 Turbo

The Mach3 Turbo was released in 2003 and is arguably still the best cartridge razor on the market. In terms of comfort, performance, ease of use and value for money, we think this razor is right up there. Highly recommended.
