Etat Libre d'Orange Hermann A Mes Cotes references a line from a poem by Victor Hugo; "by my side, Hermann seemed to me like a shadow". Aiming to capture your own shadows, Hermann opens with cool top notes of geosmin and blackcurrant, contrasted with the darkness of peppery rose and an earthy base of woods, incense and patchouli.

Fragrance Family:
Oriental

Main Notes:
Black Pepper, Galbanum, Blackcurrant, Incense, Geosmine, Rose Absolute, Vetiver, Patchouli, Ambroxan

Concentration:
Eau de Parfum

Occasion:
A versatile daytime scent for all seasons and activities.

Made in France

Hermann recreates the effect of moonlight through forest trees casting sinister shadows. This is ELO at their ambitious best. Shadowy black meets a demure off-white, where a generosity of black pepper, woods and galbanum clash with the cool mineral tang of geosmin, blackcurrant, and finished with a wash of soft incense. This is a classical scent with an audacious twist.

[Review of Hermann A Mes Cotes EDP Sample Vial]:

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but buying and reviewing fragrance samples has become something of a Covid obsession. I can't say this was my favourite, but I do love this house for all of their crazy artistry. It appears that Hermann a Mes Cotes uses tried-and-true DNA of almost every men's designer fragrance and added a bucket-load of pepper and chilli. Can't say it's my favourite from the house, but interesting and fun as always.

love/hate

this depends on your preference, as my brother preferred this over another one I enjoyed. Suffice to say, this fragrance is peppery. Mixed together with the other fragrance notes, to me, I immediately get the scent of freshly cracked white pepper.
I did end up layering this with tamdao just to add more wood/musk scent on top.

I dont hate it, but I don't love it either.
